Process Habits - Methods
Habit Process Design
Habit Process Design is the heart of the services that I provide. I will assist you in designing new habit processes and teach you how to do it yourself.
Root Cause Analysis
Root Cause Analysis is a set of techniques for identifying deep causal patterns so that we can apply remedies to those instead of their symptoms. We will be applying root cause analysis to the obstacles that are preventing you from making beneficial change.
Ground-Up Design
Ground-up design is used when you don’t yet know what your goals are, or you cannot commit to a goal.
1. Start with the fundamental questions
Start with attempting to write down some answers to important questions. We’ll ask questions like
What is your personal philosophy?
What are your talents?
What principles guide your decisions?
How do you want to contribute to your community?
These aren’t final answers. They are the current draft. As you iterate through the process, you will revise these answers. They will become clearer, more detailed, and more meaningful to you.
2. Define your aspirations
Next, I’ll help you draft a specific aspiration or challenge. This is usually a goal that might be attainable in a few months.
It has to be something that excites you and that you don’t currently know how to achieve.
3. Define fundamental behaviors
Write a list of behaviors that you predict will move you closer to your desired state.
4. Pick one
Choose one behavior.
5. Write a process
We will write a process together, which will become your habit.
6. Experiment
I will work with you, helping you identify obstacles and refining the process, until it becomes a habit.
7. Repeat
Life is composed of processes. By analyzing our current processes and defining target processes, we begin to envision a different world.
That’s a start.
You’ll take what you’ve learned and develop new target conditions. This way, you move towards your aspirations, and you begin to develop much more meaningful answers to the questions we asked in step 1.

Continuous Process Improvement
I analyze business processes for a large organization. I’ve been doing this for about 10 years. My particular methods focus on a set of industrial practices known as Continuous Improvement. There are many schools within these practices. The one that I follow most closely is the Improvement Kata.
The Improvement Kata
This methodology was developed by Mike Rother of the University of Michigan. Here’s his website:

And here’s a link to his book on amazon:

I use this methodology in organizations to improve business processes. I also find that it works very well in my and others’ personal lives. I was trained on this method at the Lean Enterprise Institute in Boston.
Lean
I’m certified in a flavor of Process Improvement known as Lean. We can talk more about that if you’re interested.
Technical Writing
I am a trained technical writer. This means I can use language precisely and can use it to construct clear plans and perform analysis.
It is through the continual process of revising our understanding of ourselves and our world that we develop.
